Robin Toan - composer
Robin Toan is a composer and a performer. She graduated from the University of Auckland, New Zealand with a Bachelor of Music degree in composition and performance clarinet in 2004. In 2005 she achieved first class honours in composition also at the University of Auckland.
In 2005, Robin gained international recognition in the “Frederic Mompou International Award for the Young Composer Competition of the Joventuts Musicals de Barcelona, 2005” receiving an Honorific Mention Award for her sextet Barcelona Postcards. Robin was named the inaugural composer-in-residence of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra National Youth Orchestra after composing Tü-mata-uenga God of War, Spirit of Man. She was also awarded the APRA Professional Development Award that consists of $NZ10,000 for travel, study and recognition and also received a Victoria University of Wellington Graduate Award to study a Master of Music in 2006. In 2004 she won the Philip Neill Memorial Prize from the University of Otago with Maze written for two percussionists and piano. This competition was open to all composers who have attended a New Zealand university.
Also in 2004 Robin was commissioned by the Opus Chamber Orchestra to compose new work, Opus 101, for their May concert series. She was also invited to write Comic in 2004 and Rainbows ‘n’ Butterflies in 2005 for the Howick School of Music Youth Orchestra, and Greek Bus Ride for the Howick School of Music Bassoon Quintet in 2005.
The New Zealand based contemporary ensemble 175 East performed Robin’s piece, Sunshine Jam following their call for new microscores in 2004. Robin won the Auckland Philharmonia Young Composer’s Competition with Over the Rubicon in 2000. She was also runner-up in the KBB/175 East Composition Competition with Rionic.
In the final year of her degree, 2004, Robin won the University of Auckland Douglas Lilburn Composition Prize in the acoustic and electronic categories. In the acoustic category she wrote Violaceous for solo violin and in the electronic category, Intergalactic Busking Experience. In 2001, 2002 and 2003 Robin was awarded second place in this competition for acoustic works Catastrophe!, Lament, and Shades of Flamenco.
She also won the University of Auckland Douglas Mews Prize for Best Unaccompanied Choral Composition in 2003 and 2004 with Takapuna Beach and Scenes from Provence. These pieces were also awarded the runner-up prizes in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir Choral Composition Competition. She also received the Llewellyn Jones Prize for music for piano in 2002 with Life, as I see it and the University of Auckland Bishop Scholarship for best stage one composition student in 2001.
In performance, Robin has twice been a clarinettist in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra National Youth Orchestra for which she received Auckland University Arts and Cultural Blues. Most recently she also played in the Opus Chamber Orchestra.

Elle a aussi reçu un bourse d'Etudes Supérieures de l'Université Victoria de Wellington pour préparer une Maitrise de Musicologie en 2005. En 2004 elle a gagné le Prix Philip Niell de l'Université d'Otago avec Maze pour deux percussionistes et piano. Ce concours est ouvert à tous les compositeurs des universités néo-zélandaises.
En 2004 Robin reçu une commande de l'Orchestre de chambre Opus pour écrire une nouvelle œuvre Opus 101 pour leur série de concerts en mai. Elle a aussi été invitée à écrire Comic en 2004 ainsi que Rainbows et Butterflies en 2005 pour l'Orchestre de Jeune de l'Ecole de musique d’Howick. et Greek Bus Ride pour le quintette de bassons de cette même école en 2005.
L'ensemble contemporain néo-zélandais "175 East" a interprété Sunshine Jam de Robin Toan suite à leur demande de nouveaux microscores en 2004. Robin a gagné le concours pour les jeunes compositeurs de l'Orchestre Philharmonique d'Auckland avec Over the Rubicon en 2000. Elle a obtenu deuxième place au concours de composition KBB/175 East avec Rionic.
Au cours de son année de licence en 2004, Robin a été lauréate du concours Douglas Lilburn à l’Université d’Auckland dans le catégorie acoustique et éléctronique. Dans le catégorie acoustique elle a écrit Violaceous pour violon solo et dans le catégorie éléctronique Intergalactic Busking Experience. En 2001, 2002 & 2003 Robin a obtenu les deuxièmes places de ce concours pour les œuvres Catastrophe!, Lament, et Shades of Flamenco.
Robin Toan a également obtenu le premier prix de la Meilleure œuvre a cappella du concours Douglas Mews avec Takapuna Beach et Scenes from Provence. Ces pièces se sont vues aussi décerner les deuxièmes prix du concours de composition pour chorale organisé par les chorales de lycée de Nouvelle Zélande. Elle a reçu le Prix Llewellyn Jones de musique pour piano en 2002 avec Life, as I see it, et s’est vue accorder la Bourse Bishop de l’Université d’Auckland pour la meilleure composition en première année en 2001.
Robin a été clarinettiste deux fois à l'Orchestre National des Jeunes de l'Orchestre symphonique de Nouvelle Zélande pour lequel elle a reçu Auckland University Arts and Cultural Blues. Récemment elle a aussi joué dans l’orchestre de chambre Opus.
